Bio
ba:zel is the electroacoustic love child of Ewelina Chiu and Daniel Vlček, born in 2014 on a whim when the two were near strangers. The project features Ewelina on vocals, soprano flute, keyboard, and midi pedal and Daniel on bass guitar, beats, and synths. ba:zel is a precarious balance between startling fragility and massively dark undertones, post-grime beats mingled with the neo-classical, connected by a soprano insidious to some, child-like and secretive to others. The project has been variously labelled as “frosty minimalism” (BeeHype), “nightmare electro-pop” (AlterEcho), “chilly art-hop” (RadioWave), and “music for sleep-deprived ravers” (180 a.m collective). Ba:zel self-released a full length album in June 2016, praised as “a postmodern dialogue” by Beehype and “just as home in a club as it is in a gallery (RadioWave).” In 2017, ba:zel collaborated with several Czech producers to create a remix EP, and later that year the duo also released their Scene 7 EP, a collection of four tracks indicating a distinct evolution in sound noted as “overall braver, the piano playing sparser, but more refined, the vocals more battle-like (DNA muzyki).”
Ba:zel has played notable festivals such as Colours of Ostrava and Lunchmeat Festival in the Czech Republic, and Waves in Vienna. In July 2018, ba:zel was chosen to perform at the Electronic Mission showcase in Ostrava, as one of six projects selected out of the entire country. Ba:zel has toured throughout Europe, with shows in Italy, Poland, Austria, Slovenia, Holland, Germany, Belgium, France and Slovakia. In June 2018, ba:zel toured with Polish darkwave artist SKY and later with Canadian artists Foonyap and Alder & Ash. In addition, ba:zel was invited to play in the monumental Grand Palais in Paris as a collaboration with actor Petr Hanak, 3D animation artist Jakub Krejci, and curator Klara Vavrikova. The project’s future tour endeavors include a string of shows in western Canada with Calgary based artist Hello Moth. In addition to their own music, ba:zel enjoys collaborating with performance and visual artists (Kara Rooney, Tereza Silon, 3D animator Jakub Krejci, light artist David Vrbik) and filmmakers (Narcisster’s The Organ Player which premiered at Sundance 2018, Andrea Culkova’s H*ART ON which premiered at DOK Leipzeg 2016, and Bara Jichova’s upcoming Consuming Others.
